Welcome to the Excalibur May news. With our next auction coming up we thought we’d give you an insight behind the scenes as to what’s actually going on here at Excalibur
So, what’s it like two days before an auction? I’d like to say we were totally ready several weeks before but because we allow vendors a lot of flexibility up to a fortnight before we publish the auction, finalising everything is always at the last minute. Many people do not understand how much work goes into producing an auction. The easy bit is taking photos of everything – usually about 1000 images are taken. We then have to decide how to combine items into suitable ‘lots’. This depends on the value. We might have a single movie poster, or single model Dinky car or Hornby train if the value is more than about £50 if not we combine individual items. The difference between a specialist auction house dealing with collectables and memorabilia, and a general auction is that we are specialists in our field. We identify the indivdual items according to type or theme so would pair a locomotive with the coaches or wagons it pulled in real life. Or we theme posters from the same film or same artist together.
We take the time to understand our items and our sellers and buyers so that the catalogue becomes logical in its formation. The time and effort we take at this stage ensures we appeal to collectors and dealers alike – and means that we achieve the best possible prices at auction. It also means that the finished catalogue is a long time in the writing!
