On Saturday 5th December, comic book fans worldwide came together to take part in Excalibur Auctions’ Comic and Comic books sale. Due to the unprecedented circumstances, bidding took place online for this auction, yet despite this it was our most successful comic auction to date with some huge results produced!
Beginning at 10am, our first lot of the auction was an Uncanny X-Men #101 – (1975 – Marvel – UK Price Variant) – the origin and the first appearance of Phoenix. With a sale price of £220, this gave a promising start to the day ahead!
Pressing on, our highlight lot of the day came soon after as we reached number 38. The biggest and most exciting lot… an Uncanny X-Men #1 – 1963 – Marvel – UK Price Variant – one of the most important Marvel Silver Age keys – first appearance of the X-Men (Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman and Marvel Girl), their mentor Professor X and their most important foe, Magneto. The cover and art is by Jack Kirby. This is one of the most popular comic and movie franchises of all time… hence why it sold for a huge £3000!
Although the X-Men #1 comic was our biggest sale of the day, other consignments certainly came close, creating an exciting bidding environment. Lot #109 – Daredevil #1 – 1964 – Marvel – UK Price Variant – first appearance of Daredevil (blind attorney Matt Murdock) and first appearances of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. This art is also Jack Kirby as well as Bill Everett cover with Everett interior art. This had a sale price of £1100!
More staggering results were produced, such as the Avengers comics towards the latter end of the day. Lot #554 was the Avengers #4 (1964 – Marvel – UK Price Variant) – First Silver Age appearance of Captain America, who joins the Avengers in this issue and Sub-Mariner, Iron Man, Thor, Giant-Man, Wasp appearances – Jack Kirby cover interior art. The sale price for this item was £1000.
Soon after this, lot #558 produced a great result and end to the auction. This Avengers #1 (1963 – Marvel – UK Price Variant) – first appearance of the Avengers with original members Iron Man (in clunky gold armour), Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man and Wasp as they battle Loki – a super-key Marvel issue, sold for an outstanding £2500.
As always thank you goes to our fabulous team, as well as all buyers and sellers who enabled us to have such a successful day.
