Original film posters, UK Quads, One sheets and international formats, generally form the backbone of our Movie Memorabilia collectables auctions, being bought as pieces of art, as well as by fans of particular films, actors and directors. Over the years, Excalibur Auctions has sold some spectacular movie posters from all kinds of genres, including Harry Potter, James Bond, Walt Disney and Marvel. We’re one of the foremost Star Wars Poster Auctions, achieving great success with all Star Wars posters, especially the Pre-Oscars UK Quad film poster for the original film 'Star Wars: A New Hope'
The most common size used in British film posters is the UK Quad poster - measuring 30" x 40", they are horizontal and quite often feature different artwork to the US one sheet movive poster. Usually available in two versions they can be found in both single and double sided forms.
This very scarcely used poster measures 27" x 40"
Measuring 27" x 41" (sometimes 27" x 40"), this is the most common size of US poster, and often the most sought-after size by film poster collectors. As with UK Quad film posters, these are seen as both single and double-sided variants, and since the 1980s, were sent out to cinemas rolled.
Measuring 22" x 28" and 14" x 36" respectively, these formats are printed on heavy stock paper and are usually presented flat or folded. The artwork is usually a smaller version of the main poster, and insert movie posters in particular are popular with movie poster collectors due to their smaller size, making them easier to frame and display.
A growing area of collecting is in the smaller format film memorabilia, such as movie stills and lobby card sets. Many collectors like these as they are often more affordable and easier to display due to their smaller size. Some rare sets, for James Bond, Star Wars, Horror and Science Fiction films are very sought after, and we're always pleased to offer them for sale in a memorabilia auction.
Measuring 11" x 14" and printed on heavy stock paper, these cards are used in displays in movie theatre lobbies, originally made in sets of eight.
Measuring 14" x 22" printed on heavy stock paper, with the top 4" or so left blank for the cinema to fill in the cinema's name and screening date, these were largely discontinued during the 1970s.
Also known as UK lobby cards, they are smaller than the US versions, measuring 8" x 10", also released in sets of 8.
As well as the most popular US and UK film posters, many countries produce their own formats of posters. The artwork on many of these is beautiful, using exceptionally talented illustrators. Some of the most common being:
Italian - foglio - in different sizes, photobustas and locandinas
Frencha - available in the largest Grande, and the smallest Petite, there are sometimes medium (moyenne) sized posters also produced
