How to Sell - Going, Going Gone! Selling is Easy

How to Sell:

Whether you have something to sell at auction for the first time, or are an experienced seller, we’ve put together this step by step guide about how we work.  We aim to make the whole process as straightforward and hassle free as possible – whilst ensuring that you get the best possible price for your items.

If you have something that you would like to sell, please get in touch with us, either using our valuation form or by calling us on 44 (0) 20 3633 0913

  1. After that initial conversation we will ask you, if possible, to send us some photographs of what you would like to sell.
  2. One of our specialists will then evaluate your items and give a rough idea of selling price based on the photos
  3. Often a specialist can visit you to evaluate your collection in the comfort of your own home – in some cases you won’t need to send photos because we will come to you.
  4. If you decide you want to go ahead and we don’t need to visit you then you can post your items to us at our Kings Langley address.  Please fill in the Lot Entry Form and enclose it with your items.  We recommend taking photographs of the items before posting and of the packaging as well as obtaining insurance for valuable contents.

At this point we will explain to you our terms and conditions, fee structures and the next auction dates.   There is no pressure to commit there and then – we know that often conversations need to be had with other involved parties or family members.

If and when terms are agreed then we take away your items to be catalogued, researched and photographed.  We then advertise and promote the sale and the individual items.

FAQ's

There is no pressure to commit there and then – we know that often conversations need to be had with other involved parties or family members.

Although we don’t produce printed catalogues for our sales, we do send out a full auction listing and information on how to view everything online. Buyers can also come and view the items in person before the sale

We also advertise on the_saleroom.com which has a huge global customer database as well as in various printed publications

Payment is made 28 days after the sale, directly into your bank account - (or the next working day if that falls on a weekend or bank holiday)

Our charge for selling at auction is a flat 20% (plus VAT). This includes lotting, photographing, advertising, insurance, FREE reserves, and no charges for unsold items (NB terms and conditions apply).  If we are in your area we can often collect your items FREE of charge

This means that if your item was to sell for £100 - you would take home £76, we would get £20 and the government would take £4 in VAT

The exception to the above is for comics and books which don't have VAT on them therefore the charge is a flat 20% for those meaning you'd take home £80 rather than £76

  1. Terms and Conditions:  All charges subject to VAT at the current rate
  2. A charge of 20.0% (+VAT) of the hammer price will be deducted from the selling price – this charge covers all the costs of lotting, advertising, photographing and cataloguing.
  3. All items are insured free of charge at mid auction estimate whilst in our possession – including in transit, in storage and at the auction.
  4. The estimated selling prices are for guidance only & should not be regarded as the true guide to the actual sale price realised.
  5. Reserve prices may be placed on items with estimates over £100
  6. Where lots are entered without a reserve, the lot may be sold to the highest bidder, at no less than 50% of the low estimate.  Lots sold with discretionary reserves may be sold at 10% below the reserve, or the next lowest bidding increment.
  7. In the event that a lot is withdrawn within 14 days of entry, a charge of £25, or 5% of the lower estimate (whichever the greater) will be levied. After this time, full estimated commission proceeds on the sale will be payable.
  8. The closing date for entries is six weeks before the auction date.  EXCALIBUR AUCTIONS reserve the right to move items to a later auction where either the maximum number of lots has already been reached or where, in the auctioneer’s opinion, earlier inclusion would result in an imbalance of lots on offer.
  9. The vendor warrants to the auctioneer that he/she is the true owner of the property (or has written authorisation from the true owner to sell the items) and has given EXCALIBUR AUCTIONS full disclosure of the provenance & authenticity of the items entered.
  10. The vendor will collect (by appointment) any unsold items within 28 days, or will pay for return by postage / courier
  11. Unless by prior agreement, any unsold lots not collected within 28 days will incur a storage charge of £1 per day.  Lots not collected after 3 months will be sold to defray expenses, the proceeds will go wholly to EXCALIBUR AUCTIONS. Unsold or withdrawn lots will not be released until all outstanding charges have been settled in full.  Unsold items may be entered into a future auction at the auctioneer’s discretion without reserve.
  12. Any offers for lots after auction are only to be negotiated through the directors of EXCALIBUR AUCTIONS & any sale thereafter to EXCALIBUR  AUCTION’S customers, or which have been viewed through EXCALIBUR AUCTION’S catalogues, viewing days, advertising & internet sites are deemed to be sold by EXCALIBUR AUCTIONS & full vendor’s and buyer’s commissions are payable by the vendor.
  13. A BACS transfer for the proceeds of the sale less all applicable charges will be processed to the seller 28 days after the auction date – provided that EXCALIBUR AUCTIONS has received full payment from the purchaser.
  14. In the event of any disputes EXCALIBUR AUCTIONS reserves the right to cancel the sale & return the item to the vendor.  The vendor will be responsible for any costs incurred.
