Comics, Comic Books, Marvel or DC?

Marvel Comics in Auction

At Excalibur Auctions, we hold regular auctions featuring Marvel Comics, including early issues of Spider-Man, X-Men, and Hulk, as well as key Silver Age issues such as Amazing Fantasy #15. Our past auctions have included both raw and graded Golden and Silver Age issues of X-Men #1, Spider-Man #1, Fantastic Four #1 and many more.  We're always on the lookout for scarce Marvel comics featuring first appearances of popular characters such as Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine and Captain America, as well as other key issues.

As well as Marvel Comics, we also sell DC Comics

Past auctions have included Batman #1 and Superman #1; in fact, we were the first UK Comic Auction to sell a Superman #1.  We have been selling Marvel Comics, DC Comics and Independent titles since our first comic auction in 2019.  Whilst not quite as sought after as Marvel Comic titles (no idea why Spider-Man is more popular than Superman or Batman?), we still get good results on vintage (Silver Age and older) DC Comics featuring Flash, Green Lantern, Teen Titans and titles such as Detective Comics and Action Comics.

Independent Comics and British Comics

British Comics include Marvel Comics (UK versions) as well as firm favourites such as The Beano, Dandy, Eagle, TV21, 2000AD, Valiant and Warrior that have been around as long as the original Golden Age comics from the USA.  In fact, the three longest comic books of all time were British.  The two most popular, The Beano and The Dandy, were released by DC Thomson in the 1930s, and were enormously popular in British Culture in the 1950s, as they were almost the only entertainment available to children.

Since the 1980s, Independent Comics (also known as alternative Comics) have appeared. Whilst Marvel and DC dominated the 1970s, Independent titles present an alternative to the mainstream superheroes - Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman and Superman.  They often stray away from the mainstream style, and indeed, if they start off mainstream, there's usually a bit of a twist!  Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics publish many of the Independent Comics, including Groo the Wanderer and The Crow.  More recently, Dark Horse published later releases of Star Wars after Marvel produced the original run.  Other popular independent titles include Predator, Aliens and Sin City by Dark Horse, and The Walking Dead and Spawn by Image Comics.
